Toddler Room
Welcome to our Toddler Room in Perth at MLC’s Early Learning Centre (ELC)! Located on the MLC campus in Claremont, the ELC is a delightful extension of our school. The Toddler Room is home to MLC’s littlest minds, providing a nurturing environment for children from two years of age. It is the perfect place for them to start their schooling journey with play–based learning. Boys and girls will typically stay in our Toddler Room, named Boodja (‘land’ in Noongar), for one year. From here, they graduate to one of our Pre-Kindy Rooms located right next door within the ELC.
Play-Based Learning
Our Toddler Room has a one to five staff to student ratio, with a degree qualified early childhood teacher. A smaller ratio allows for more individualised attention, which is crucial at this stage in a child’s development.
The ELC follows the Early Years Learning Framework (ELYF), which focuses on sensory, play-based learning. We want our Toddlers to build essential skills like exploration, independence and self-help. Our childcare program ensures that our Toddlers are learning and socialising in a safe environment with same–age peers.
With that in mind, we introduced the MLC Bush and River School in 2023. This program is specific to the ELC and allows our Toddlers to explore their curiosity in a safe and supervised environment. Activities are designed to foster a strong relationship with the natural environment, build autonomy and resourcefulness, and create an appreciation for nature and the outdoors. In our Toddler Room, boys and girls also enjoy:
- A flexible indoor and outdoor program
- Dedicated relaxation times
- Age-appropriate Music and Mandarin lessons
- Visits to the Junior Years Library located on campus
- Intergenerational interaction with residents from St Louis’ Retirement Village
- Exciting incursions that extend their learning
Important Information for Parents
The MLC Early Learning Centre is open from 6.30am until 6.30pm* Monday through to Friday. Toddlers must complete at least two days per week in our ELC. No uniform is necessary, with the MLC uniform only introduced at Kindergarten.
Nutritious meals are provided throughout the day by our on-campus chef. We keep in regular communication with our parents through the OWNA Childcare App. Our staff send pictures and updates throughout the day, so parents are kept informed on what their child has been up to.
