Empowering Young Minds: Our Exciting Adventure with Agency in Learning

Share

MLC Junior Years is buzzing as we embark on an exciting journey with the New Metrics initiative. This innovative project aims to extend learning beyond traditional tests and assessments, empowering students to become creative producers of knowledge and skilled navigators of their educational journeys. Best of all, this initiative enhances our existing curriculum without replacing any of its core elements.

Our Year 4 students are taking a central role through a health investigation project titled ‘Making MLC a Happier and Healthier Place. With no boundaries set for their creativity and exploration, the girls are fully empowered to shape their investigation, allowing their curiosity and innovation to lead the way. The project has seen them conduct surveys, interview staff and students, explore various health and wellness practices that could be implemented in our school, and create a special place within the school grounds where students could go to be happy.

Our approach to integrating Agency in Learning involves a scale of learner development:

  • At the initial level, directed learners use guidance from teachers and parents to participate in learning, following familiar steps and frequently seeking affirmation about their progress.
  • As diligent learners, they interpret and follow set rules and instructions, complete tasks with encouragement, seek feedback, and participate in group activities.
  • Moving to self-regulated learners, they become skilled achievers who make well-considered decisions about their learning, work productively with classmates, seek guidance, and strive to meet expected standards.
  • Finally, as extended learners, they are motivated to learn independently and collaboratively, engaging with challenging ideas, seeking innovative methods, and incorporating different perspectives into their approaches.

Through this initiative, we have discovered that students thrive when given the autonomy to explore their interests. They are excited to engage with differing opinions and methods, collaborate with peers, and seek out new understandings. This approach has not only enhanced their academic performance but also their social and emotional development.

Our learners are becoming more self-aware and confident, showing a remarkable ability to explain concepts and provide advice to their classmates. They are enjoying having their ideas challenged and will not be afraid to question concepts presented by teachers and other adults. This level of engagement and critical thinking is a testament to the success of integrating Agency in Learning.

Our Junior Years staff are at the beginning stages of this exciting journey, fuelled by the enthusiasm of working as a collaborative team. The opportunity to explore and nurture the unique qualities of our students has brought a renewed sense of purpose and unity. This shared experience is not only enriching our professional lives but also enhancing the learning environment for our students.
