Hear Her Story: Charlotte Spencer

Share

As a Duke of Edinburgh Youth Award Leader, Charlotte lives out the MLC Values of Integrity, Wonder, Courage and Humanity every day. Giving back to her community and supporting other young people through the program, she learnt invaluable skills that taught her the importance of leading with purpose and giving back.

With her sights set on a career in Medicine, Charlotte hopes to use this skillset to continue helping others. The path to Medicine was nurtured by MLC’s holistic approach to education and the guidance of her teachers. A driven and passionate student, Charlotte chose an ATAR Pathway for Years 11 and 12, motivated by her desire to push herself toward her personal best.

However, it was still important to Charlotte that she balanced her studies with co-curricular activities. Completing her IGSSA 25 (making 25 IGSSA teams during her time at MLC), playing the oboe in numerous MLC ensembles, representing her House as Olympia Prefect and achieving her Gold Award in the Duke of Ed, Charlotte always made time to enjoy the little moments that made her MLC experience so special.

“Throughout my time at MLC, I loved being involved in as many co-curricular activities as I could. I began my Duke of Ed experience in Year 9 and finished completing my gold level awards towards the beginning of Year 12. I had to self-organise many of my service, sport, skills and adventurous journeys. I made new friends, learnt time management and have many amazing experiences that will last a lifetime.”

When reflecting on her time at MLC, Charlotte said keeping her mind set on her main goal helped propel her forward. “School is never just about the grades you get or the achievements you make; the experiences you have shape who you will become in much greater ways than merely a mark. Keep your head high and believe in yourself because anything is possible with determination. At times it will get hard and that’s okay – you’ll get to where you want to. Believe in yourself and everything will come together.”

As for the future, Charlotte is already making strides. “I have been fortunate enough to receive the Julia Gillard Women in Leadership Scholarship at Curtin University where I will be completing a Physiotherapy Honours degree. I’m going to immerse myself within university life, seeking community service, leadership courses and international study experiences soon. I intend to continue to study to get into Medicine after my undergraduate degree and grow my skills to further develop my strengths.”

Charlotte cannot wait to see where her journey will take her, knowing that her time at school shaped who she is today. “I enjoyed all the opportunities and experiences I had at MLC and hope to embody the positive influence I learnt from the MLC Community into my future.”
