Hear Her Story: Gemma Goldie

Share

As a previously competitive diver, Gemma is used to looking at the bigger picture from high above. So, when it came to selecting a pathway for her final school years, she decided that a blend of General and VET Courses was the right combination for her.

In Year 11, Gemma completed a Certificate III in Fitness and studied Mathematics Essentials, Marine and Maritime Studies, Career and Enterprise, English, and Physical Education Studies. In Year 12, she continued these subjects and completed a Certificate IV in School Based Education and Support and a SCSA Workplace Learning Program with 305 workplace hours as an Education Assistant.

“I chose this pathway and these subjects because it allowed me to obtain practical skills and work-ready qualifications. It also allowed me to focus on my sport, volunteer work, part-time job and external courses related to the coaching and judging of diving.”

Outside of the classroom, this love for sport shone bright. She played in the MLC Netball Club’s Gold Team, represented the Perth Netball Association in the Under 20 Division for the Association Championships Weekend, and competed in IGSSA Softball, Netball, Swimming and Volleyball. In-between volunteering as a diving coach and judge at a State and National level, she also completed her Level 2 Coaching Course for diving and achieved a Level 4 Judging Accreditation with Diving Australia.

Gemma said MLC provided her the opportunity to challenge herself, as well as the flexibility to participate in co-curricular activities, attend external training courses and continue to volunteer as an Education Assistant beyond the course requirements.

“This pathway prepared me for the next chapter in my journey. My co-curricular activities helped me develop a good work-life balance and promoted teamwork and communication. The skills I learnt in my subjects, particularly Career and Enterprise, were invaluable to my success. From resume writing and interview skills to human resources and industry relations information, it got me ready for working beyond school.”

The day after graduating from MLC, Gemma commenced relief work as an Education Assistant for the Department of Education. She deferred her offer from Murdoch University to study a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood and Primary Teaching to begin working full-time in January 2024 as an Education Assistant in the Learning Development Centre at Christ Church Grammar School.

Her passion for diving also continues and in December 2023, she completed the World Aquatics judging certification course and has continued to work as a diving coach with WA Diving. She will also be travelling to Melbourne and Brisbane in 2024 to judge diving at age and elite national championships.
